Positive Marker

My next development has come with the idea of using acetate inside a camera and a symbol stuck to it to show a marker for my optimism or pessimism that areas in memory and conscience create. By now its obvious that the plus and the minus signs are the welcoming or repelling nature of the place. I kind of like this idea but dont think I'll take it further because I feel the image is restricted by the sign in the middle and the blurry blackness of it leads to different connotations in my eyes and doesnt work well all the time. As experimentation I think it shows promise for my next areas though.

Positive House

The postive house is an idea that I quickly came to abandon because I thought that I wouldnt be able to do it justice and also felt that I wanted things to be more simple and subtle. What I do like about these photos though is how the quality of the images comes out with the camera I used. The camera is called a Diana Mini and the low fi qualites create dreamy light leaks and interesting colour schemes which I feel (given the right conditions) can enhance a place I want to deem positive or negative.

Positive Places

And on the opposite side of the spectrum is the inspiring and relaxing feelings that places give off to the viewer. The plus side view point window is the visualising of natures maintained yet also unhandled landscape that, when left to stand as it is can lead to places of enlightenment and enjoyment. A walk in the forest or a rural country lane, a trip to the beach or relaxing in the outdoors generally leads to better well being than the pollution and crime riddled chaotic cities of human mass habitat and all the other aspects that come with it. The way that people play an overactive part in destroying space leads to crime, pollution, danger, decreptitude and people eventually leaving which leads to more of the same but only worse and so an area unspoiled by these factors must seem like a welcome retreat.

Negative Places

These photos represent looking out on soceity in a pessimistic way due to how they effect the individual. Here are scenes of boarded up houses, multi story carparks and litter in urban planning which lead to bad conceptions from the public.

I've now started with an idea about view points and how I want to signify the positive or negative effects of a place in peoples eyes. I'm going with an idea I started to use in my last project and I'm expanding that further. I've created plus and minus sign windows which I have stuck on the front of my camera and I have been going around looking at places or parts of society that is common in giving an area a bad name. These photos represent the view of an individual in the literal sense as a sort of comical/surreal turn on how these areas are seen by people. Above we have scenes of the sordid, decaying, abandoned and mundane, which lead to areas being just a dirty blotch on human habitat.

Looking At Place And Human Habitat

These photos are of the underneath of the pier in my home town. The underneath acts as a shelter to many of the homeless population and so because of this leads much of society to stay away due to bad assocaitions they have of the place due to stereotypical conceptions of homeless people and trouble. Like in many cities around the world it doesnt matter about size when areas and their meanings are universal.
